On
arrival in Australia, William & his family lived at
Emerald Hill, now known as South Melbourne. He was next
recorded some 40 miles north west of Melbourne at Black
Forest where Sarah was born and died in 1859 and
Elizabeth was born nearby at Kyneton on 16 Jan
1863. Another Sarah was born at Beechworth in 1860 and
died in 1867 at Goulburn, New South Wales. Beechworth was a developing goldmining town at that time, however it appears the presence of several Cramptons from Lincolnshire was the main influence for the visit as William and Mary Ann soon returned to Kyneton where the MelbourneBendigo rail was being built. |

Hearing of new lands opening up on the Lachlan River, in central NSW, William headed west and was taken by the new lands and soon acquired river frontage land near Condobolin . The property was called Newlands. |
